Frequently asked questions and instructor notes
All our courses assume that each student has a personal computer to use during the class. Our hands-on approach to learning requires they do. This topic gives information on how to set up the classroom to teach this course. It includes minimum requirements for the students’ personal computers, setup information for the first time you teach the class, and setup information for each time that you teach after the first time you set up the classroom.
Hardware requirements
Each student’s personal computer should have:
· A keyboard and a mouse
· An Intel Pentium 4, Intel Centrino, Intel Xeon, or Intel Core Duo (or compatible) processor
· At least 256 MB of available RAM (512 MB recommended) for Windows XP, and at least 512 MB of available RAM (1 GB recommended) for Windows Vista
· At least 1.8 GB of hard-disk space (2.8 GB if Photoshop CS3 will also be installed)
· A DVD-ROM drive for installation
· Speakers and a sound card (If these are not installed, students will not be able to complete activity B-2 in the unit titled, “Electronic distribution.”)
· An XGA or better monitor, capable of 24-bit color or more (1,024
´
768 monitor resolution) with 16-bit video card
Software requirements
You will need the following software:
· Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise (certified support for 32-bit editions)
· Adobe InDesign CS3
· Adobe Photoshop CS3 (This software is optional. If it is not installed, students will not be able to complete optional activity A-2 in the unit titled, “Preventing printing problems.”)
· QuickTime 7 or later (If this is not installed, students will not be able to complete activities B-1 and B-3 in the unit titled, “Electronic distribution.”)
· Adobe Reader (If this is not installed, students will not be able to complete activity B-3 in the unit titled, “Electronic distribution.”)
· Adobe Flash Player (If this is not installed, students will not be able to complete activity C-2 in the unit titled, “Electronic distribution.”)
· Adobe Digital Editions (If this is not installed, students will not be able to complete activity C-2 in the unit titled, “Electronic distribution.”)
· Tectronix Phaser 480X printer driver (An actual printer is not required, but students will not be able to complete activities A-1 and B-1 in the unit titled, “Print settings” unless a driver is installed.)
· AGFA Accuset 1500 printer driver (An actual printer is not required, but students will not be able to complete activities A-1 and B-1 in the unit titled, “Print settings” unless a driver is installed.)
Network requirements
The following network components and connectivity are also required for this course:
· Internet access, for the following purposes:
· Downloading required software from www.apple.com and www.adobe.com
· Downloading the latest critical updates and service packs from www.windowsupdate.com
· Downloading the Student Data files from www.axzopress.com (if necessary)
· Activating InDesign CS3
First-time setup instructions
The first time you teach this course, you will need to perform the following steps to set up each student computer.
1 Install Windows XP on an NTFS partition according to the software manufacturer’s instructions.
OR
Note: You can also use Windows Vista. The screen shots in this course were taken using Windows XP, so students’ screens might look somewhat different.
2 From the Control Panel, open the Display Properties dialog box and apply the following settings:
· Theme — Windows XP
· Screen resolution — 1024 by 768 pixels
· Color quality — High (24 bit) or higher
3 Set up Internet access for the students. Internet access is required; an e-mail account is not.
4 Open Internet Explorer and navigate to www.update.microsoft.com. Update the operating system with the latest critical updates and service packs.
6 Start Internet Explorer and configure it as follows:
a Choose Tools, Internet Options. (If you’re using Internet Explorer 7, press Alt to show the File menu.)
b On the General tab, under Home page, click Use blank.
c On the Advanced tab, under Security, check “Allow active content to run in files on My Computer.”
d Click OK.
e Close Internet Explorer.
7 Install the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player (version 7 or later). The latest version can be downloaded from www.adobe.com. Accept all defaults during the installation.
8 Install the latest version of the Adobe Reader (version 8 or later). The latest version can be downloaded from www.adobe.com. Accept all defaults during the installation.
9 Install the latest version of Apple QuickTime (version 7 or later). The latest version can be downloaded from www.adobe.com. Accept all defaults during the installation.
a Go to www.apple.com/quicktime/download/.
b Click Free Download Now.
c Save the installer to the desired location.
d Click Run (or double-click iTunesSetup.exe).
e Follow the onscreen instructions to install Quicktime.
10 Install Adobe Digital editions. The latest version can be downloaded from www.adobe.com. Accept all defaults during the installation.
a Go to www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions.
b Click Install Adobe Digital Editions (or click Download now).
c Click Install.
d Click Yes.
e Click I Agree.
11 If necessary, change the view option in Windows Explorer so the file extensions are shown. To do this:
a Open Windows Explorer.
b Choose Tools, Folder Options, and activate the View tab.
c Under Advanced settings, clear “Hide file extensions for known file types.”
d Click OK. Close Windows Explorer.
12 Install Adobe InDesign CS3 and Adobe Photoshop CS3 (optional) according to the software manufacturer’s instructions. If you have Creative Suite 3, you need to install only InDesign CS3 and Photoshop CS3 for this course.
13 Install the Tectronix Phaser 480X printer driver. These steps might vary depending on which version of the Windows operating system you’re using.
a Choose Start, Control Panel.
b Double-click Printers and Faxes.
c Click Add a Printer, and click Next.
d Verify that “Local printer attached to this computer” is selected.
e Clear “Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer,” and click Next.
f From the “Use the following port” list, select “LPT1: (Recommended Printer Port).” Click Next.
g From the Manufacturer list, select Tektronix.
h From the Printers list, select Tektronix Phaser 480X. Click Next.
i If prompted, select “Keep existing driver (recommended).” Click Next.
j Verify that the name in the Printer name box is Tektronix Phaser 480X, and click Next.
k Select “Do not share this printer” and click Next.
l Under “Do you want to print a test page,” select No and click Next.
m Click Finish.
14 Install the AGFA Accuset 1500 printer driver.
a In the Printer & Faxes dialog box, click Add a Printer. Then, click Next.
b Verify that “Local printer attached to this computer” is selected.
c Clear “Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer,” and click Next.
d From the “Use the following port” list, select “LPT1: (Recommended Printer Port).” Click Next.
e From the Manufacturer list, select Agfa.
f From the Printers list, select AGFA-AccuSet 1500. Click Next.
g If prompted, select “Keep existing driver (recommended)” and click Next.
h Verify that the name in the Printer name box is AGFA AccuSet 1500.
i If necessary, under “Do you want to use this printer as the default printer,” select No. Then, click Next.
j Select “Do not share this printer” and click Next.
k Under “Do you want to print a test page,” select No.
l Click Next and then click Finish.
m Close the Printers and Faxes dialog box.
n Close the Printers and Faxes dialog box and Control Panel.
15 At the root of the hard drive, create a Student Data folder (C:\Student Data.)
16 Copy the student data files to the Student Data folder you created. If you don’t have the data CD that came with this manual, download the student data files for the course. You can download the data directly to student machines, to a central location on your own network, or to a disk.
a Connect to www.axzopress.com.
b Under Downloads, click Instructor-Led Training.
c Browse the subject categories to locate InDesign CS3: Production, ACE Edition. Then click the course title to display a list of available downloads. (You can also access these downloads through our Catalog listings.)
d Click the link(s) for downloading the Student Data files, and follow the instructions that appear on your screen.
Setup instructions for every class
Every time you teach this course (including the first time), you will need to perform the following steps to set up each student computer.
1 If necessary, reset any defaults that have been changed in previous classes. For example, choose Edit, Preferences, General, and then click Reset All Warning Dialogs.
2 Reset InDesign’s preferences by holding Shift+Ctrl+Alt while starting InDesign. When prompted to delete InDesign preference files, click Yes.
3 Delete the contents of the Student Data folder, if necessary. (If this is the first time you are teaching the course, create a folder named Student Data at the root of the hard drive. For a standard hard drive setup, this will be C:\Student Data.)
4 Copy the data files to the Student Data folder. (See the download instructions in the preceding section.)
CertBlaster software
CertBlaster pre- and post-assessment software is available for this course. To download and install this free software, students should complete the following steps:
1 Go to www.axzopress.com.
2 Under Downloads, click CertBlaster.
3 Click the link for InDesign CS3.
4 Save the .EXE file to a folder on your hard drive. (Note: If you skip this step, the CertBlaster software will not install correctly.)
5 Click Start and choose Run.
6 Click Browse and then navigate to the folder that contains the .EXE file.
7 Select the .EXE file and click Open.
8 Click OK and follow the
on-screen instructions. When prompted for the password, enter c_indescs3.
