Frequently asked questions and instructor notes
All our courses assume that each student has a personal computer to use during the class. Our hands-on approach to learning requires they do. This topic gives information on how to set up the classroom to teach this course. It includes minimum requirements for the students’ personal computers, setup information for the first time you teach the class, and setup information for each time that you teach after the first time you set up the classroom.
Hardware requirements
Each student’s personal computer should have:
· A keyboard and a mouse
· Intel Pentium 4, Intel Centrino, Intel Xeon, or Intel Core Duo (or compatible) processor
· 512 MB of RAM
· 3.5GB of available hard disk space
· A DVD-ROM drive
· An SVGA monitor set at 1024´768
Software requirements
You will need the following software:
· Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise
· Adobe Photoshop CS3
Network requirements
The following network components and connectivity are also required for this course:
· Internet access, for the following purposes:
– Downloading the latest critical updates and service packs from www.windowsupdate.com
– Downloading the Student Data files from www.courseilt.com (if necessary)
First-time setup instructions
The first time you teach this course, you will need to perform the following steps to set up each student computer.
1 Install Windows XP on an NTFS partition according to the software manufacturer’s instructions. If the student machines have Internet access, and they are behind a software or hardware firewall, install the latest critical updates and service packs from www.windowsupdate.com.
Note: You can also use Windows Vista, although the screen shots in this course were taken using Windows XP, so students’ screens might look somewhat different.
2 From the Control Panel, open the Display Properties dialog box and apply the following settings:
· Theme — Windows XP
· Screen resolution — 1024 by 768 pixels
· Color quality — High (24 bit) or higher
3 Install Photoshop CS3 according to the software manufacturer’s instructions.
4 Configure Photoshop CS3 as follows:
a Start Adobe Photoshop CS3. At the Welcome screen, click Close.
b Choose Edit, Preferences, File Handling. Set Maximize PSD File Compatibility to Always. Click OK.
c Close Photoshop.
5 Download and install the Stylus Photo 2200 ICC profile from http://www.epson.com. Because Web sites are updated regularly, the following steps might not work exactly as described.
a Connect to www.epson.com.
b Click the link for North America, if necessary, and then click the link for USA.
c Click the link for Drivers & Support, and click Printers.
d Under Printers, select Ink Jet. In the list of printers, select Epson Stylus Photo 2200.
e Under Drivers & Downloads, click Windows.
f Click Premium ICC Profiles for Stylus Photo 2200.
g Under Download Your ICC Profiles by Media Type, next to Premium Luster Photo Paper, click Win. Extract the downloaded files to a folder on the desktop.
h Run the Setup installer. After a few moments, a dialog box indicates that the ICC profile installation is complete. Click OK.
6 Download and install the Stylus Photo 2200 printer profile from http://www.epson.com. Because Web sites are updated regularly, the following steps might not work exactly as described.
a Connect to www.epson.com.
b Click the link for North America, and then click the link for USA.
c Click the link for Drivers & Support, and click Printers.
d Under Printers, click Ink Jet. In the list of printers, click Epson Stylus Photo 2200.
e Under Drivers & Downloads, click Windows.
f Click Printer Driver v5.5bS, or the most recent driver for your operating system.
g Click Download Now, and follow the instructions to download the printer driver. Unzip the downloaded files to the default location, typically C:\epson. The EPSON Printer Utility Setup dialog box appears.
h In the EPSON Printer Utility Setup dialog box, click OK; then click Stop Searching. After the installation is complete, click OK.
7 If you don’t have the data CD that came with this manual, download the Student Data files for the course. You can download the data directly to student machines, to a central location on your own network, or to a disk.
a Connect to www.courseilt.com/instructor_tools.html.
b Click the link for Photoshop to display a page of course listings, and then click the link for Photoshop CS3: Color Printing, ACE Edition.
c Click the link for downloading the Student Data files, and follow the instructions that appear on your screen.
8 If possible, power on all monitors at least a half-hour before the calibration activity in Unit 1 because this will help ensure accurate calibration. If possible, you should familiarize yourself with the procedure for adjusting the monitors’ brightness and contrast settings.
Setup instructions for every class
Every time you teach this course (including the first time), you will need to perform the following steps to set up each student computer.
1 If necessary, reset any defaults that have been changed in previous classes.
a While holding Ctrl+Alt+Shift, start Photoshop. This will open a dialog box through which you can return Photoshop to its default configuration.
b Click Yes to delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file.
c Choose Window, Workspace, Delete Workspace to open the Delete Workspace dialog box. From the Workspace list, select Action Editing. Click Delete and then click Yes.
d Close Photoshop.
2 Configure Photoshop as follows:
a Start Photoshop. At the Welcome screen, click Close.
b Choose Edit, Preferences, File Handling. Set Maximize PSD File Compatibility to Always. Click OK.
c Close Photoshop.
3 Delete the contents of the Student Data folder, if necessary. (If this is the first time you are teaching the course, create a folder named Student Data at the root of the hard drive. For a standard hard drive setup, this will be C:\Student Data.)
4 Copy the data files to the Student Data folder. (See the download instructions in the preceding section.)
CertBlaster exam preparation for ACE certification
Students interested in attaining ACE certification can download CertBlaster exam preparation software from the Course ILT Web site. To do so:
1 Go to www.courseilt.com/certblaster.
2 Click the link for Photoshop CS3.
3 Save the .EXE file to a folder on your hard drive. (Note: If you skip this step, the CertBlaster software will not install correctly.)
4 Click Start and choose Run.
5 Click Browse and then navigate to the folder that contains the .EXE file.
6 Select the .EXE file and click Open.
7 Click OK and follow the on-screen instructions. When prompted for the password, enter c_psCS3.
